St. Elmo Steak House, Indianapolis, IN

If an aged steak is a thing of beauty, it is made all the more so when served in a steak house that has been open to the dining public since 1902. That long history is in evidence at the St. Elmo Steak House in downtown Indianapolis.

St. Elmo bills itself as, “a place where salesmen and tycoons came to seal the deal, where attorneys and politicians strategized and plotted, where coaches and players celebrated wins and lamented losses, where celebrities came to unwind from a show.”

We put that reputation to the test several weeks ago when we brought a large group – 20 people from a firm retreat – into St. Elmo, sat down and ordered off the menu. That’s a tall order for any restaurant, but the staff at St. Elmo did not miss a beat.

We started with the restaurant’s signature St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail™ (yes, it is trademarked). It was terrific, and the accompanying horseradish sauce was strong enough to bring tears to my eyes and force me to catch my breath.

For an entrée I chose the 20 oz. ribeye steak, which was done to perfection. A truly exceptional cut of meat. Still, I hungrily eyed the 30 oz. roast beef that filled a dining companion’s plate, and almost resorted to stealing a sample.

I finished the epic epicurean adventure with a very Midwestern dessert of apple pie and ice cream. All of which spurred me into rising at 5:30 am the next morning for a challenging session on the elliptical machine in the hotel gym.

All in all, St. Elmo Steak House is quite the establishment, and certainly worthy of the legacy it carries so proudly.
