Eddy V’s – Charlotte, NC

The restaurant scene in Charlotte is hot and getting hotter. My wife and I recently discovered that the latest outpost of an appealing network of seafood restaurants called Eddy V’s Prime Seafood, an affiliate of The Capital Grille. The restaurant had opened its doors in Charlotte a few months ago. Never one to shy away from a new experience, we made a side trip to the heart of the city to pay a visit to Eddy’s place.

It was well worth the effort. Eddy V’s has quickly become a place to “see and be seen” in Charlotte. From the moment we entered, the ambiance was welcoming and comfortable. High top seating was available at the bar, and the scene was lively. More formal seating was open in the dining room.

A word about lighting. I am a huge proponent of proper lighting in restaurants, as it can make the difference in the dining experience. Eddy V’s got the lighting just right – dim enough to create a cozy atmosphere for intimate dining, but bright enough to read the menu without a flashlight.

Even though Eddy V’s is known as a seafood restaurant, we took the overland route and started with steak tartare, which was beautifully prepared tableside. The flavor was exquisite, and the texture was perfect.

We followed our server’s recommendation and selected a course of corn and crab chowder. It was served piping hot and was quite flavorful, without being overpowering or too creamy. So far, so good.

For an entrée we returned to the seas, splitting an order of Parmesan crusted sole. It was disappointing. The fish was too well done, and the crust was a bit too crunchy. A lighter touch would have made it a much more enjoyable dish. Maybe next time. However, for someone who loves corn as much as I do, the side of Mexican corn was heavenly, with crisp kernels and spices that provided a taste of Mexico.

The wine list was extensive, allowing for very nice pairings during the meal. Plus, prices were quite reasonable for an upscale restaurant in a busy downtown setting.

Service was attentive, if a bit slow. Fortunately, we were in no rush to get back on the highway to continue our journey and enjoy a leisurely and thoroughly satisfying meal. Eddy V’s is on our “return visit” list in Charlotte.
