Most of my restaurant reviews are for places I have visited in my travels around the country. But I also enjoy a good meal closer to home. For many years my wife and I had a favorite Chinese restaurant, Shing Yee, in our hometown. Venturing out one recent evening, we were surprised to find an entirely new restaurant, La Tate, was now serving guacamole and tacos in the location where we had often enjoyed dumplings and fried rice.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained, so we sat down to sample what turned out to be a truly authentic experience in Tex-Mex cuisine.
I selected a spicy shrimp with rice dish which was perfectly seasoned – enough to wake up my taste buds without being overwhelming. My wife chose the enchiladas verdes, with a spicy chicken filling smothered in green chili sauce that was scrumptious. The service was prompt and pleasant, and the staff was very knowledgeable about the menu.
Still, halfway through our meal we observed a server delivering a sizzling plate of fajitas to a nearby table, making us jealous. It immediately went onto our “must order” list for our next visit.
Jan is a margarita connoisseur, and La Tate’s passed her test. It was expensive, but delicious, and the bartender was not bashful with the tequila.
Considering how new the restaurant is, the atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. It is a family owned and operated venture, and it shows, with an easy and familiar style that made us feel right at home. La Tate is a welcome addition and a great alternative to the ever popular Café Sol Azteca that has been the go-to spot for Mexican in Newton.
