Dark, elegant, and moody, the Gilt Bar in Chicago is a choice spot for an intimate discussion or private meeting. Dark woods, richly upholstered seating, and a low lighting make combine to create a subdued and cozy atmosphere.
We stopped by the Gilt Bar for a drink and appetizer on our way to dinner at the more well-known Harry Caray’s. It was a pause well worth taking. After choosing libations from the extensive cocktail menu, my dinner companion and I split two items from the appetizer menu.
She being a girl who is always seeking the world’s best steak tartare, she jumped at the chance to sample the offering here. It was pronounced, “Excellent!” although the egg yolk that accompanied the steak was a bit much. I chose the meatball, which was nearly the size of one of Chicago’s iconic 16” softballs. Tender, perfectly seasoned, and plentiful are the best terms to describe the meatball, but it could have easily served as my full meal.
The service was as discreet as the lighting. We received just the right amount of attention.
We had to tear ourselves away from the Gilt Bar in order to make our reservation at Harry’s place. But it is now on our list of “go back to” spots in Chicago.
